I Didn't Start a Business. I Was Looking for a Cure | Entrepreneur origin story | Khulan Davaadorj

People often ask me what inspired me to start Lhamour. They expect a strategic answer — a gap in the market, a business plan, a vision board. The truth is much simpler, and far more personal: I was sick, I couldn't find what I needed, so I made it myself.

When Your Body Forces You to Listen

In my early thirties, I developed eczema and allergies for the first time in my adult life. As someone who had never struggled with skin issues, it was both physically uncomfortable and deeply frustrating. I tried products after products — most of them full of synthetic ingredients that seemed to make things worse, not better.

I started going back to what my grandmother used to make. Oils infused with Mongolian herbs. Simple, clean preparations that Mongolian women had been using for generations. And slowly, my skin started to heal.

The Moment the Business Was Born

I wasn't thinking about launching a company. I was thinking about my own skin. But as I went deeper into Mongolia's botanical heritage, I realized something: this knowledge was disappearing. The wisdom that had kept women's skin healthy for centuries was being replaced by imported, synthetic alternatives that had nothing to do with our climate, our biology, or our traditions.

That's when Lhamour began — not as a startup, but as a need. A personal need that turned out to be a collective one.

What This Taught Me About Entrepreneurship

The businesses that last are usually the ones that begin with a genuine problem. Not a trend. Not an opportunity someone spotted in a report. A real, lived experience that the founder was so close to, they had no choice but to solve it.

If you're waiting for the perfect idea, the perfect timing, or the perfect funding — you're looking for the wrong thing.

The question to ask yourself is this: what problem do you care about so deeply that you'd work on it even if no one paid you?

That's where your business is hiding.

I shared a shorter version of this story on LinkedIn this week — and the response has been wonderful.

What problem made you start? I'd love to hear your story in the comments.
